One Client’s Story
Change can be challenging under the best of circumstances. But it takes passion, commitment, and leadership to invest in quality improvements when things already seem to be going so well. Such was the case with one of our clients, the school of continuing studies at an elite private research university.
A longtime leader in providing high quality courses and programs to diverse learners, this program had enjoyed enormous growth over the past ten years—especially in its professional graduate and certificate programs. With a prestigious brand, innovative curriculum, and first-to-the market offerings in health informatics, predictive analytics, and public policy and administration, it attracted high quality faculty and students.
But driven by continuous improvement, the leadership team commissioned Collegium in 2013 to conduct a needs-assessment focused on its online courses and programs. Employing a mixed-methods approach of focus groups, surveys, class observations, small group diagnoses, and interviews of faculty, administrators, and students, we critically examined nearly every aspect of the academic experience, and ultimately made several recommendations on how the quality of program courses could be additionally enhanced.
In 2016, Collegium was invited back by this team to more specifically study the student experience, as well as to document the impact of changes implemented since 2013. Our findings were clear: not only did the university embrace our recommendations, but the resulting initiatives have had a dramatic positive impact on teaching and learning.
